The Lange 1 is the most recognizable watch ever created by A. Lange & Söhne, the image of the Saxon brand. With its asymmetric dial and patented outsize date, this model won approval by watch enthusiasts, experts, collectors since its presentation becoming a moment exemplary.
It was the 24th of October 1994 when the company founder Walter Lange and his partner Günter Blümlein, after four years of difficult work, presented to the world the Lange 1 and three other new timepieces, the rectangular Arkade, the Saxonia and the sensational Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite” (for full details on this subject, read our ” History of the Lange 1 ” article).
The main Lange 1: champagne dial with case, hands and hours markers in yellow gold
In 2019 the Lange 1 turns 25 and the Saxon manufactory will celebrate the significant jubilee with a “25th Anniversary” edition in white gold limited to 250 timepieces.
The notable event of 1994 will be commemorated for this present year with an entire collection of different models in white gold that honor the key milestones of the Lange 1 watch family. They will all share some key elements like the argenté- colored dial in strong silver with printed deep-blue numerals and hour markers, blue date numerals, and a shading coordinated blue gator leather tie with a dark seam.
Denoting the dismiss from the “25th Anniversary” series, the limited edition of the Lange 1 features a deep-blue printed argenté dial with a recess, blue date numerals, a hinged cuvette with an engraving of Lange’s headquarters and a hand-engraved balance chicken with blued lines.
The 38.5 mm case houses the hand-wound caliber L121.1 that was introduced in 2015 as an evolution of the first caliber L901.0. Counting a freely swaying Lange balance spring and paired with a large cam-poised balance to assure superb rate precision, it beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and features a twin origin barrel with a power reserve of 72 hours.
Finishes are extraordinary: the three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver, eight screwed gold chatons, and the hand-engraved balance rooster. The outsize date with a “25” symbolizes the 25th anniversary. Interestingly the hand-crafted lines of the engraving pattern are blued.
The engraving on the hinged cuvette depicts the Lange headquarters that date back to 1873, the names of Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein, and a relief engraving of the engraving “25 YEARS LANGE 1”.
Limited to 250 watches, the Lange 1 “25th Anniversary” ref. 191.066 is matched to a hand-stitched dull blue crocodile leather tie with dim sewing secured by a white gold prong buckle. alange-soehne.com
